It is certainly possible to get divorced with only one lawyer involved in your case, but one attorney cannot represent both parties in a divorce. A divorce is a lawsuit just like any other situation where one party sues another, so spouses going through divorce are “opposing parties”, and Michigan attorneys are prohibited from representing two clients who have conflicting interests.
However, both parties, whether represented or not, are both entitled to fair and equitable terms of divorce. If you hire me as your attorney, both parties will know from the onset that I represent your best interests. It will also be clear that neither party will be bullied or manipulated into accepting unreasonable or inequitable results. Divorce is never easy, but hiring an attorney that can protect your legal rights and get you the results you deserve while also maintaining a cordial and productive relationship with the unrepresented party will make your life easier.
